3-2-1 Launch!!

Posted by David Parkerson on March 30, 2012
If you've been with HomeLife Academy for a number of years you'll remember how we used to sell a few shirts, such as the popular "I'm Not Talking to Myself, I'm Having a Parent-Teacher Conference" shirt. We discontinued our store due to the rapid growth of HLA itself, but continued to get requests at nearly all the fairs. Even with so many still wanting shirts I was very reluctant because our main focus is homeschool ministry through the service of helping families with home education.
So we kept the store idea on the back-burner, until now that is. Along came our good friends, the McCarvers. You may already know Kenneth and Kaboa from their own t-shirt store, "Family Matters", and perhaps you've even purchased a cool product from them. Well, now they've decided to take over the BlueEagle Store for HomeLife Academy! We're all very excited. We now get to provide fun homeschool products again! We're just getting everything uploaded and getting new products ordered, so if you don't see your size please check back next week! Thanks!

Parent-Teacher Conference Shirt

Posted by David Parkerson on March 30, 2012

We get quite a few people ask us -  "So, where did the idea for the Parent-Teacher Conference" shirt come from? I think it was about 2004 or maybe 2005 and I received an email from one of our moms regarding her enrollment. Below her signature was this line, "I'm not talking to myself I'm having a parent-teacher conference." Well, I'd never heard that before and nearly fell out of my chair laughing. I quickly emailed her back and asked if I could put the phrase on a t-shirt. She replied, "Sure, please send me one!" And that's how the shirt was born.

We've had a few different designs since then, and I've even seen the saying in some other places. But it continues to be one of our most popular. What's really fun is hanging a shirt up at the events and watching as people pass by -- often they do a double-take, so make sure they read correctly. Sometimes they stop and grab their friends walking with them, and point accross to our booth, followed by squinting to read it, and then gut-renching laughter. I could sit and watch that all day long. Always brought a smile to my face.

But it's more than just a good laugh in this cool T. The humor carries some meaning as well. You see, the parent-teacher conferences we grew up with are now a thing of the past. We are the parent. And we ARE the teacher. It's a delightful and fun-filled life. Sure, it can make you crazy enough to talk to yourself. But we wouldn't want it any other way. Having our children home each day, learning all the time, is a great adventure!

HLA in the News!

Thank you, Kristen, for the great article in The Tennessean!

Kristen Kindoll: Here’s the deal on umbrella schools

Umbrella schools are a popular registration choice for home-schooling families.

The best description of an umbrella school is a private institution that maintains student records and paperwork. The parent who is doing the teaching still decides on curriculum, instructional style and the school year calendar.

HomeLife Academy is an umbrella school in Jackson, Tenn. It is a Category IV church-related school. According to Tennessee code, schools classified as Category IV are exempt from submitting a notice of intent to the local superintendent of schools, attendance records to the superintendent, meeting teacher qualifications and standardized testing requirements.

The staff members jobs vary. The main tasks fall in the realm of fielding requests for records and preparing transcripts and diploma packets for high school students. There are several counselors on staff who provide insight and answer questions about home education.

Kenneth R. Shreeve, assistant administrator for HomeLife Academy, explains their philosophy:

At HomeLife Academy, we consider the service that we provide as a ministry to our families. We do not view other schools as competition but fellow workers in the ministry field,

Families can feel uncertain about choosing an umbrella school over their local district. The reasons for going with an umbrella school can differ. Some families crave a sense of autonomy. Others may find the religious affiliations of the umbrella school attractive. Perhaps the familiar faces and voices of staff members provide a level of comfort needed in a familys home education. This could be a factor when registering with a local umbrella school compared with one in a different city.

While we do occasionally have a student or family come by our office to pick up a form or transcript that is needed right away, or a counselor may meet a parent to discuss home schooling over coffee, almost all of HomeLife Academys support services are available via email, phone or online. Shreeve stated.

Umbrella schools typically have a fee associated with their services. It should be noted most districts are free, unless a student enrolls past the registration date, and then a penalty fee is typically assessed.

Umbrella schools can provide other amenities.

HomeLife Academy has online grade reporting. This is a high convenience factor when settling on an umbrella school that does not offer this service. HomeLife Academy does not require standardize testing, though other umbrella schools may.

One reason that a school may choose to require achievement tests would be to establish an independent, unbiased way to assess a students progress to validate the students education, Shreeve said. It was decided that we would revise our application process. This will allow us to continue offering the same level of freedom to those families that exercise those freedoms responsibly, while hopefully reducing the number that would abuse them.
